Understanding your report

What do violation classes A, B and C mean?+

HPD classifies violations by danger. Class C is immediately hazardous (for example no heat, vermin, lead paint hazards) and usually has to be corrected within 24 hours to 5 days. Class B is hazardous (30 days). Class A is non-hazardous (90 days).

What's a certify-by date?+

The date by which the owner must fix the condition and certify the correction to HPD. Missing it can lead to fines and keeps the violation open on the building's record.

Why do some very old violations still show as open?+

Often the work was done years ago but the correction was never certified with HPD. Certifying it (or asking HPD to reinspect) is how they get cleared.

Where does this information come from?+

NYC Open Data: HPD violations and building registrations, and the city's PLUTO building records. City data can lag by a few days, so always confirm on HPD Online.
